ICD and Depot – two terms used daily in the logistics industry, have certain similarities and differences. Let’s distinguish these two concepts with Vietsun Logistics.
What is ICD?
ICD (Inland Clearance Depot) – also known as a dry port located inland, recognized by the State as an inland customs clearance point. ICD operates as a “miniature seaport”, with permanent customs, supporting inspection, loading/unloading of goods, storing containers and performing all import-export procedures on the spot.
The key point is the word “Clearance”. This is the factor that creates the difference between ICD and Depot.
Main functions of ICD:
– Customs clearance for import/export goods.
– Gather goods that have completed customs clearance procedures.
– Container loading/unloading.
– Reduce pressure on main seaports.
Goods from ICDs are usually cleared through customs and are just waiting to be transported to deep-water ports to be loaded onto export vessels – helping to save time and reduce congestion at seaports.

What is Depot?
Depot (Container Depot) is simpler - a warehouse/container yard, mainly serving:
– Empty container storage.
– Repair and clean containers.
– Technical maintenance before reuse.
Depot does not have the function of customs clearance like ICD, and usually serves shipping lines and logistics businesses in rotating containers.
– ICD can be seen as an upgraded Depot, because in addition to container services, it also has customs clearance functions.
– Depot is simply a container yard, it has no role in customs processing.
